A jumpstart back into illustration and pursuing my personal art.
After many years of doing random scribbles in unfinished sketchbooks, I had finally decided to commit to making a fully-finished piece. I had needed an outlet that would allow me to exercise my more creative side. No prompts, no brands, and no clients to consider—just an outlet to make art for myself. I had done a crude sketch after feeling inspired from watching the 2001 animated film, Metropolis.
It was my first time doing a larger illustration (9”x12”) in years and so I spent some time deciding how to enlarge and finalize the details of my clumsy, little sketch.
I had imported my drawing into Photoshop and worked out the details using my Wacom tablet. At the time I was still lacking confidence, and so having the ability to easily undo changes and work in digital layers gave me some piece of mind. I taped some watercolor paper onto my large monitor and roughly traced the outlines. The smaller, finer details were worked out on the canvas.
My intention was for the hair to mimic the flow of water. Each section of hair was intended to have a loose, drape-like appearance.
I decided to keep this piece monochrome—mostly using tints of blue with slight hints of green. Shadow blue and muted earth green hues worked great for creating an aquatic atmosphere.
I consider this piece to be an accomplishment as it was my first completed illustration in years. Although it took many months to complete, it served as a great therapeutic activity during my downtime. Overall, I’m satisfied with the outcome and this was an effective exercise to slowly overcome my creative block.
